The Tumbler Ridge Community Resiliency Fund was established to support the healing journey of the Tumbler Ridge community following the events of February 10.

This fund is intended to support community-level recovery, healing, and long-term resilience initiatives. It is not designed to provide direct support to individuals or families, but rather to help fund projects, programs, and supports that respond to community-identified priorities and contribute to collective healing over time.

The Northeast BC Community Foundation is honoured to steward this fund with care, transparency, and respect for the community.

Purpose of the Fund

The purpose of the Tumbler Ridge Community Resiliency Fund is to support initiatives that help the community recover, heal, and build resiliency in the aftermath of a deeply traumatic event.

Funding priorities will be guided by community input and may evolve over time as needs change.  The process is being designed to ensure that decisions are informed by the voices of Tumbler Ridge resident, including youth, educators, first responders, health care workers, families, services providers and other community members.

Community Advisory Committee

 Tumbler Ridge Community Advisory Committee has been established to help guide the process and ensure local voices are reflected in funding decisions.

The committee includes representatives from the community with a range of perspectives, experiences, and connections. Members were recruited through an application process and appointed by the Northeast BC Community Foundation Board of Directors.

The committee’s role is to provide advice and local insight, help identify community priorities, support engagement efforts, and make recommendations that will help inform how the fund is used.

The Community Advisory Committee members are:

  • Melody Baynton
  • Amber Bell
  • Mark Deeley
  • Jane Miedzinski
  • Nicole Noskana
  • Katie Stelfox
  • Janice Turner
  • Joan Zimmer

Our Approach

The Foundation and the Community Advisory Committee are following a thoughtful, trauma-informed, and community-centred process.

We know that healing does not happen on a fixed timeline. Community needs may shift over the coming months and years, so the process is being designed to be both responsive and adaptive.

The engagement process will focus on:

  • identifying community-defined priorities for healing and resilience;
  • ensuring diverse voices are heard, including youth and underrepresented groups;
  • creating safe and respectful opportunities for input;
  • building trust and transparency in decision-making; and
  • allowing priorities to evolve as the community’s needs change.

Community Engagement

Community Engagement is being led by the Community Recovery Manager and supported by the Community Advisory Committee.

The engagement will focus on gathering timely input to help identify initial funding priorities. This may include targeted conversations with specific groups such as youth, educators, first responders, and health care workers, as well as other opportunities for residents to share what they feel is needed in the community.

Engagement with youth is a particular priority. The committee has discussed the importance of connecting with young people in places where they feel safe and supported, including schools and youth spaces.

The process will also be mindful of the sensitivity of engaging directly impacted families. Input from those most affected will be approached with care and, where appropriate, through existing trusted relationships and conversations.

How Funding Decisions Will Be Made

Funding decisions will not be made until a process has been established for receiving, reviewing, and prioritizing funding requests.

The Foundation and the Community Advisory Committee are currently working to develop that process. Once it is ready, information will be shared publicly about:

  • how organizations or groups can apply;
  • what kinds of projects may be eligible;
  • how priorities will be assessed;
  • how decisions will be made; and
  • how the community will be kept informed.

Commitment to Transparency

The Northeast BC Community Foundation is committed to keeping the community informed as this work moves forward.

Updates will be shared as the process develops, including information about community engagement opportunities, what we are hearing from residents, and how community priorities are shaping the use of the fund.

This fund belongs to the healing journey of Tumbler Ridge. Our role is to steward it responsibly, listen carefully, and help ensure that the generosity shown to the community is directed toward meaningful, community-informed support.
